Zero-waste scalable bag (hammock), 2025
Material: 100% post-production textile waste from Kenya
The bag is inspired by local women who carry their everyday belongings – and often children – on their backs. This observation led to the idea of a practical carryall that is at once simple, durable, and multifunctional.
The design uses production offcuts, giving the fabric a new life. Its cut is deliberately minimalist – based on a simple rectangle – to ensure minimal additional waste in the making process. By altering the proportions and scale of the rectangle, bags of different sizes can be created. Depending on need and fabric availability, it can be made as a small belt bag or a larger shoulder bag. The bag is tied at the ends, keeping the construction simple and avoiding the use of extra materials.
When the dimensions are significantly enlarged and the fabric used in a double-layer, the piece can also function as a hammock. This added versatility enhances its value, offering not only practicality but also a place to rest.
